Observation Narrative
[GPF: according to Rod Simmons, this stand is located at the extreme upper limits of tides on Fourmile Run but occupies a place in the floodplain that tides do not reach and that is influenced by overland flow of groundwater. However, there has been considerable hydrological alteration (hard channelization) of the main stream channel and it is possible that the stand was once tidal. Most recently, an old tidal channel/oxbow to the south of the stand that had been cut off from tidal inputs has been reopened. In any case, compositionally, this stand has many characteristics of tidal hardwood swamp but resembles non-tidal river backswamps in the abundance of Acer saccharinum.]
